Tanaka's Triumphant Return

Tanaka's Triumphant Return

Leads Yanks to Seventh Straight Win
By Howard Goldin
BRONX, NEW YORK, JUNE 10- On Monday night, Masahiro Tanaka made his first start at Yankee Stadium since April 12. The native of Japan was extremely sharp, especially during the first three frames as he retired all nine batters he faced.
The game was only Tanaka’s second start since returning from a six-week stint on the disabled list. The first hit surrendered by the 26 year-old was a lead-off single by Yunel Escobar in the fourth. After Escobar was erased in a double play, Bryce harper took a 1-0 pitch deep into center for his 19th home run of the season. Harper, the National League

Player for the Month of May, paces the N.L. in home runs, walks, slugging percentage and OPS. The home run was the third given up by Tanaka in six starts this year; all three were hit at Yankee Stadium,
The major league sophomore gave up three hits in his final three innings of the contest. For the third time this season, Tanaka remained in a game for seven innings. In each of those starts, he recorded a win. Tanaka left the contest having yielded only five hits, a single run and not having walked a batter. He fanned six Washington batters.
Tanaka has won both of his starts this month in a similar fashion. He pitched seven innings, gave up only one run and did not issue a walk. In the two games combined he yielded only eight hits and fanned 15.
Yankee skipper Joe Girardi spoke glowingly of Tanaka’s recent outings, “I think his stuff is as good as last year. That’s as efficient as he’s ever been. That’s command [15 strikeouts and 0 walks. [He’s] just really consistent. His stuff is sharp and he feels good about his stuff.”
Tanaka’s opponent on the mound was former Cy Young winner Max Scherzer, so the 36,613 fans in the park expected a pitchers’ duel. Girardi believes Tanaka thrives in such pressure situations, “I think he enjoys the stage. That’s one of the reasons he came to New York.”
After the game, Tanaka talked about his success on the mound, “I felt pretty good out there. My mechanics and good balance allowed me to throw the ball well. I’m glad I was able to go seven innings and only gave up one run.”
The Yankee sophomore is only the fourth pitcher in major league history to have 17 of his first 26 career starts. He follows Boo Ferriss, Cal Eldred and Steve Rogers in that rare accomplishment.

BRONX, NEW YORK, JUNE 8- Talk about a smoking gun, a clueless gunman was nabbed by cops thanks to the new ShotSpotter system and he handgun hanging out of his pocket.
At around 4 a.m. on June 7, police responded to a report from ShotSpotter of a single gunshot fired in the Jackson
Houses. Responding Officers Luke Paulson and John Carbone went to 325 East 156th Street where the ShotSpotter system recorded the gunfire. At the scene the officers observed a couple in their twenties sitting on a bench by themselves.
The officers who are assigned to the housing patrol PSA 7, approached the couple and asked if they had heard any gunfire. The man and woman both said they heard nothing. Officer Paulson then asked the male to raise his arms and turn around. When he did not respond, the officer physically turned him around and patted the man’s pants and coat pockets. When he did so Officer Harkins noticed a portion of a handgun sticking out of his pocket. As the cops put handcuffs on the suspect the gun fell to the floor. While recovering the firearm cops recovered a spent shell casing under the bench where the couple was sitting.
Police recovered the loaded 22 caliber Walther P22 and arrested 22-year-old Charles Annis. Cops also arrested his companion Mary Tejeda who was wanted on a bench warrant. They recovered a small amount of marijuana from her purse.

ShotSpotter uses a series of microphones placed on buildings in developments. The microphones pick up the sound of gunfire and its software is able to determine the location of where the shot was fired.
Officer Paulson praised the ShotSpotter technology in helping to locate shooters and get guns off the street.
“You can canvass and save someone who has been shot. That is probably its greatest benefit,” said Paulson.

By Howard Goldin

BRONX, NEW YORK, JUNE 7- The Yankees wasted no time in putting runs on the board against the Angels on Saturday night

The first three batters in the first reached base and a sacrifice fly to center by Mark Teixeira knocked in the first Yankee run. A wild pitch by Angels’ starter Garrett Richards scored the next run. Two more runs crossed the plate on Brian

McCann’s 9th home run of the year. Carlos Beltran and Didi Gregorious, who both singled, scored on a single by Brett Gardner.

Richards, who gave up six runs, was removed after 0.2 innings. Yankee skipper Joe Girardi remarked, “We faced a really tough pitcher. We took advantage of some walks (3) and a fielder’s choice.’

Unlike the previous night, the six runs scored in the first frame were sufficient to give the Yanks their fifth straight victory.

The seventh Yankee run scored after three consecutive singles in the second.

The Yanks scored their final tally in the eighth as Teixeira drew a walk with the bases loaded and one out to tie the number of runs they scored in their most recent game. The second RBI was Teixeira’s 45th of the season, which leads the American League. He has driven in 13 runs in his last 10 games. Teixeira, who also singled in the second inning, has reached base safely in 22 of his last 23 games.

Yankee starting pitcher Adam Warren retired the first nine batters he faced. He didn’t fare as well in the second time through the Los Angeles lineup as five of the first seven batters reached base in their second trip to the plate.

The Angels scored their first run after Mike Joyce led off the fifth with a double. Los Angeles superstar Mike Trout led-off the following inning with his 15th homer of the year, third in the American League. He scored his 41st run, also third in the A.L. I fhe moves up to lead the league in runs scored he will become the first player to lead either league in runs scored for four consecutive seasons.

Those two runs were the only ones yielded by Warren in 6.2 innings, who earned his fourth win of the season. Girardi expressed pleasure with Warren’s performance, “he did a really good job in the early going. He’s pitching great in our rotation,. He’s made some adjustments. We always felt he could do both [start and relieve].”
